Stewiacke, Nova Scotia (October 21, 2009) – CHP Leader and candidate in the Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley (CCMV) by-election, campaigning in Stewiacke, commented today on two important issues confronting voters. “There seems to be no shortage of important issues emerging during this by-election,” said Jim Hnatiuk. “From the blatant attempt by Stephen Harper and his Tories to bribe voters with partisan cheques, to the neglect of oversight of stimulus spending, voters must be aware that there are serious problems with the way the government is being run in Ottawa.” It appears that the Conservative Party has tried to politicize the stimulus spending, giving preference to government-held ridings and putting the Tory logo on photo-op cheques.

Meanwhile, in an article that has received little media attention, a Montreal whistle-blower, in a Canadian Press story released Oct. 16, 2009 revealed that stimulus money in Quebec is being controlled by Mafia-controlled construction companies.

The article reported: “Despite all the public money at stake, the author of several books on the Mafia said he doubts any government in Canada, at any level, will delve into the organized-crime issue.”

“When will the Prime Minister and other Party leaders prove him wrong by speaking out about this issue?” demands Hnatiuk.

“Canadians don’t want their hard-earned income being siphoned into the pockets of organised crime in this country – or any illegitimate destination,” said Hnatiuk. “Voters in CCMV should be concerned that the Conservatives under Stephen Harper and his Attorney General, Rob Nicholson, seem to have done nothing about this issue.”

“These are but two of the issues that expose the dangers of big government that has lost any sense of accountability. Voters of CCMV rejected Mr. Harper’s brand of government in the last election, but they’re still looking for a responsible small ‘c’ conservative government.

“The CHP is the only fiscally and socially responsible federal party in Canada. All other parties rely on ballooning government spending and taxing to bribe voters with their own money. The voters of CCMV have common sense. They know that subjecting future generations of Canadians to crushing tax levels that kills our competitiveness as a nation is not the way forward. The CHP offers better solutions to the issues that face us, and that’s what the voters in CCMV are telling me they want when I knock at their doors,” said Hnatiuk.

Hnatiuk is campaigning hard in Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley during the current by-election.

Truro — Thursday, October 8, 2009 — Christian Heritage Party Leader, Jim Hnatiuk, became the first candidate to register for the by-election call in the federal riding of Cumberland–Colchester–Musquodoboit Valley (CCMV).

The businessman and retired military officer says, “I’m ready to serve the constituents of CCMV with a strong voice, just as Bill Casey did. I’m proud to live in and serve in a riding where the voters are not afraid to speak with an independent voice, and choose the candidate that will best represent them in Ottawa.

“CHP Canada has policies that would strengthen Cumberland-Colchester Musqudoboit Valley, and I believe this by-election will be about more than what the “major” parties have to offer. Voters here have proved that they are willing to look for and choose the candidate who has the best blueprint for governing. Our campaign will be about offering ‘Better Solutions‘ to the serious issues that face us. There are better ways to ‘do’ politics in Canada, and I believe voters are ready for those better solutions,” says Candidate Hnatiuk. “I believe voters are going to look hard at the policies to determine what is best for them and the country. And I believe voters will discover that the CHP’s policies are the best.

“Voters are going to hear a lot about things like spending, infrastructure, and taxes in the coming weeks,” stressed Hnatiuk, “and I want voters to know that there are ways to meet the needs of CCMV without increasing government debt through deficit spending, and taxing Canadians. There are infrastructure projects like the new hospital in Truro and the planned Truro-Colchester Civic Centre that the other parties, frankly don’t have a plan to finance beyond the rhetoric of the ‘Gas tax’ or deficit financing. That’s not good enough anymore. Taxing Canadians and deficit budgets aren’t working. They’re robbing us of our competiveness as a nation, and eroding our standard of living.

“CHP Canada would simply use the Bank of Canada to fund our infrastructure needs, so these much needed projects could become reality–without taxing Canadians today and long into the future. It’s time to use the Bank of Canada as it was designed to do, to serve the best interests of the country,” said Hnatiuk.

“From what I’m hearing from voters, they want to send a message to Ottawa that they expect their MP to have the best plan for the people–smaller, fiscally responsible government, low taxes, with priority given to the economy.

“I served the people of Canada for 25 years in the Navy, and I’m ready to put my strategic and business experience to work to serve them as their MP as well.

Ottawa, CHP–”The Conservative Party is obviously feeling the backlash from the pro-life and pro-family community for their calculated risk in handing out $400,000 to the Toronto gay pride parade, and is now doing some damage control,” says Jim Hnatiuk, CHP Canada’s national leader.

Canwest News has reported that Conservative MP Brad Trost said, “‘almost the entire Conservative caucus’ and ‘most of the Prime Minister’s Office were taken by surprise at this announcement.’”

Mr. Trost is further quoted as saying, “‘The pro-life and the pro-family community should know and understand that the tourism funding money that went to the gay pride parade in Toronto was not government policy.’”

But selling out Canadian families to receive votes is strategic party policy. And, denying culpability is equally strategic!

Egale, a gay advocacy group, recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada.

This extract from the June 22, 2009 Maclean’s provides the missing piece of the puzzle that Mr. Trost doesn’t think we have.

“Conservative strategist Jaime Watt, who is chairman of the Navigator communications firm, was presented with the group’s (i.e. Egale’s) inaugural Leadership Award for LGBT human rights.”

So who is this Conservative strategist, Jamie Watt?

He raised his daughter from a past marriage with his same-sex partner.

He played a key role in getting Mike Harris’ Conservative government elected in Ontario. The Harris government changed every single statue that dealt with common-law couples and granted same-sex couples equal rights to the traditionally married couples, according to Derek Vanstone, Jim Flaherty’s chief of staff.

Vanstone also called Watt ‘a trailblazer who made it easier for people to be gay and Conservative, like myself.’

According to Flaherty, who was Ontario’s attorney-general at the time, ‘Some were surprised our government took this decision… but conservatives fundamentally believe in equality and fairness. It does, however, sometimes take leaders such as Jaime to help us live up to our ideals.’”

Ron Gray, former CHP leader, explains, “This brief (275 word) article reveals why true conservatives have been losing ground to radical homosexual fundamentalists in recent years: Egale and similar groups have infiltrated the ‘conservative’ heartland, starting ‘way back in the days of the Harris ‘Common Sense Revolution’. The pitch has consistently been: Never mind what’s good for Canada’s families and children; we can deliver what’s good for your party: votes. But we want what we want: the elimination of any standards of sexual right and wrong.”

In the interest of receiving more votes the Conservatives have made the hallmark of change ‘fairness’ rather than passing along social values to the next generation.

Gray continued, “When Don Spratt and I were lobbying for pro-life legislation in November, 1989, we sat across the desk from a ‘pro-life Christian’ P-C Member of Parliament, and said: ‘This is what Christians want.’ He looked us in the eye and said, coldly, ‘But you can’t deliver their votes.’”

So when Watt and others like him present a vote-getting strategy that requires caving in on every moral front, Conservative politicians–including many ‘Christian’ Conservative politicians–topple over like duck-pins. It’s expedient to give up your principles to obtain the votes.

Hnatiuk says, “Leadership requires taking a principled stand on issues, and remaining true to your convictions. It’s time for true leadership on this and other important issues affecting Canadian society. CHP Canada is willing to take that lead.”

OTTAWA, Jan. 27, 2009 – The Christian Heritage Party of Canada and the CHP’s former leader have been notified by the Canadian Human Rights Commission that allegations of ‘hate’ by an Edmonton man against the Party, one of its Electoral District Associations and former leader Ron Gray have been dismissed.

The CHRC dismissed the three complaints because “the content and context of the material which forms the basis of the complaint is not likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt based on sexual orientation,” says the letter from Lucie Veillette, secretary of the Commission, to Ron Gray. “Accordingly, the file on this matter is now closed.”

Gray was critical of the CHRC’s procedures, and the effect its proceedings can have of “chilling” public discussion of important policy issues.

“I wrote to the CHRC about these complaints Feb. 19, 2007–almost two years ago–and have not yet had a reply to that letter,” Gray said. “The proceedings have cost about $50,000. Fortunately, there were people across Canada who believed in free speech enough to cover those costs with voluntary donations.

“I want to thank the hundreds of people who helped to defend free speech rights in Canada by contributing to our legal defense fund.

“But the CHRC’s method of operation is both slipshod and unjust. The complainant bore no costs at all for filing a frivolous and groundless complaint; as Ezra Levant has said, ‘The process is the punishment’–whether the respondent is innocent or guilty.

“The idea of protecting people and groups from ‘hate speech’ that incites to violence is still sound,” Gray said. “But such incitement is already a criminal offence, and the defense against it belongs in criminal court, where the normal rules of evidence and the presumption of innocence apply. In a real court, these ridiculous charges would never have been admitted.”

The new CHP Leader Jim Hnatiuk maintains that the CHP is the only federal political party in Canada that has and will continue to defend “traditional marriage” between one man and one woman.

The new CHP Leader, Jim Hnatiuk, re-affirms the commitment of the CHP to fight for the repeal of Section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act. “We are the only political party which is taking seriously the threat to our freedom of speech posed by this repressive piece of legislation.”

This follows on the heels of last summer’s fight for freedom of the press, in which Human Rights Commissions were forced to back down from their investigations of Ezra Levant, Macleans Magazine and Mark Steyn.

“These cases against the CHP and Ron Gray were a test of the political metal of our Party. Would we kowtow to having our freedom of political opinion taken away? We did not,” Hnatiuk states, “and we will not!”

Hnatiuk also affirms his Party’s will to fight against the repression of freedom of speech such as suffered by Rev. Stephen Boissoin and Dr. Chris Kempling.

“We’re in this for the long haul; for the sake of all Canadians,” Hnatiuk confirms.

Jim Hnatiuk

Fundamental to good government is honesty, integrity and transparency. Regrettably, it is the total departure from these attributes that has brought instability, vain conceit and disingenuous motives to our nation’s capital.

Prime Minister Harper must bear much of the blame for this crisis; the Conservative Party is after all the instigator. Leaders must lead, but equally important is the need to serve the people. The failure to provide conciliatory leadership during a minority government has resulted in today’s chaos. Most Canadians do believe that the issue that precipitated this conflict was the Prime Minister’s threat to cut subsidies to political parties.

Eliminating such subsidies is not an attack on democracy as the coalition members decry, but would represent a return to democracy. While the CHP would applaud the policy, it was unfortunately, recklessly proposed by the PM.

It should be pointed out to Canadians, that contrary to what they hear in the media, not all political parties benefit from such a funding scheme. The CHP has never received such funding – it is 100% member supported and funded.

The NDP and Liberals may never admit it, but the selfish ambition of the coalition is obvious and their attempts to convince Canadians to the contrary are pitiable. Driven together through greed, they saw an unprecedented opportunity to gain leverage and power, so they selfishly put partisanship aside and entered into negotiations for power with the Bloc.

While the Canadian economy is not collapsing, the economic signals are worrisome. Indeed, according to most analysts, Canada is one of the healthiest of the G8. It is also untrue, that the Conservative government has done nothing. On the contrary, they have acted with prudence in the face of the global economic crisis. There have been tax reductions at both the personal and the corporate levels which in themselves will act to modestly stimulate the economy. The question is, can we do more, and where should we put our focus?

Should we bail out the ailing auto industry? This requires careful analysis, not a quick fix by throwing millions of taxpayer’s dollars at a patient that may not survive.

It needs to be pointed out that Canada is in desperate need of infrastructure renewal, and this has been the case for some time. Cities for successive elections have begged Ottawa to do something to help them cope with the problem. This is an issue on which all of the parties in the House of Commons have failed Canada.

The CHP has proposed for some time, an infrastructure policy that has already been used successfully in Canada. It’s a simple, non-inflationary policy that was applied in Canada at the end of WWII. Implemented by the Liberals under C.D. Howe, McKenzie King’s minister of reconstruction, it worked very well.

The Bank of Canada would issue interest-free loans to cities, municipalities, provinces and Crown corporations for infrastructure projects, such as water and sewage treatment systems, airports, bridges etc… which are in dire need of revamping. The builder, the province, would collect revenues from increased economic activity, which would be used to pay back the interest free loan and the money would then be withdrawn from the economy, so it wouldn’t have an inflationary consequence. But the improved infrastructure would remain.

This policy has been used successfully in our nation’s history, and should be implemented again to enable communities to meet urgent, current needs.

In addition, Canada would benefit greatly if out of this crisis emerged a truly democratic parliament with proportional representation, where the vote of every citizen would count, and political parties succeeded or failed depending on their own grassroots support, rather than feeding at the public trough. Such improvements to our democracy would benefit our nation by empowering the grassroots political involvement of citizens, leading to a more active electorate and increased voter turnout.

The CHP is a federal party that continues to offer Canada stability, honesty and loyalty. The CHP will only seek to lead through service, according to principle, for the good of the country – not just for the good of our political party.

Now that the Governor General has prorogued parliament, we hope that cooler heads will prevail in the coming months.

We know that during these times the focus should be on Canadian families and not the corporate sector. Before any policy is implemented, the question must be asked, “Is this good for Canadian families?”

Canadians should also note that all other parties have failed to put integrity and respect for human life ahead of power and finances. This abandonment of historic moral principles leaves all of them without a defence in claiming the moral high ground.

Historically, it has never been more important that our nation’s leaders recognize the constitutional requirement that Canada be governed in light of principles that recognizes the supremacy of God and the rule of law. Those principles made Canada the most desirable place in the world to live; and only the CHP is committed to restoring those principles for all Canadians.

Reported in Thursdays Winnipeg Free Press the Opposition parties are calling the Tory plan to end political-party subsidies “a declaration of political war.” “Why is it only now that opposition parliamentarians are in an outrage?” says Jim Hnatiuk the newly elected leader of the Christian Heritage Party (CHP). “The subsidy was introduced five years ago and the CHP and other smaller parties have been fighting the unfairness of that legislation since that time.”

In 2003 all registered political parties were banned from accepting donations from corporations and unions and the subsidy was introduced to offset the losses the parties incurred.

Remarkably the legislation did not allow for the smaller registered parties to benefit from the subsidy even though the ban for receiving funds included all registered parties.

Hnatiuk, speaking from Winnipeg, explained, “The CHP and other smaller registered parties have not received any funding from this subsidy. But now, because there is the potential that the larger parties will lose the subsidy, Manitoba NDP MP Pat Martin reportedly says, “This is outrageous. “And Winnipeg MP, Anita Neville, suggests it’s a Conservative attempt to bankrupt the Liberals.”

Hnatiuk asks, “Where have these MPs been for the last five years? It’s only now, with Flaherty’s decision to cancel this self-serving tax grab, that the other large parties are outraged. It’s only when it starts hurting their own pocket books.

Outrageous? It is outrageous for our Parliamentary representatives to develop such passion only when they stand to lose access to funds arbitrarily taken from our tax dollars.

Finally getting rid of this subsidy is a good idea; but it doesn’t provide, as some Tory advocates claim, “a level playing field”.

“A trulylevel playing field would be obtained by implementing the CHP’s proposal for a checkoff on income tax forms, allowing all taxpayers to decide who gets their $2. That would take the allocation of taxpayers’ funds out of the hands of the MPs altogether, and give it to the taxpayers – where it belongs.

The new leader of the Christian Heritage Party has issued a call for the University of Calgary to protect the free speech rights of its students.

“A university should be a place where peaceful free exchange of ideas is encouraged, not stifled,” said Jim Hnatiuk, while travelling from his home in Halifax to Winnipeg. He cited a commitment published in the U of C calendar: “The University of Calgary community has undertaken to- respect, appreciate, and encourage diversity.”

A student group, Campus Pro-Life, has been ordered by the university’s lawyers not to display posters which equate abortion to the Holocaust and to racism. They will only be allowed to have the posters on campus if they are “turned inward” so they cannot be seen, according to the lawyers’ letter.

“That instruction stifles free speech,” said Hnatiuk. “To say the posters are only allowed if they cannot be seen is the same as saying the posters are not allowed.”

The university administration says the restriction is intended to prevent the posters from “triggering violence”, but Hnatiuk points out that the posters have been displayed on campus for five years without violence, and that the CPL has always acted peacefully.

“For the university to silence the CPL students–because a few others might react violently–is to support the bullies,” Mr. Hnatiuk added. “The university, according to its own statement, is committed to protect and encourage the peaceful expression of controversial ideas. That’s what a university is all about.”

Mr. Hnatiuk has appealled for the members of his party and the whole pro-life community across Canada to support Campus Pro-Life at the U of C.

“The letter threatens the students with suspension, expulsion–even arrest,” he said. “That threatens their academic and future careers. That’s pretty heavy-handed censorship, and it has no place on the campus of a tax-supported university.

“These students are courageously taking a stand that defends the free speech rights of all Canadians.” Mr. Hnatiuk condemned a statement by the lawyers, in their letter, that “the Charter of Rights and Freedoms does not apply on a university campus.”

“No law firm, no administration, and certainly no tax-funded school can arbitrarily deny the constitutional rights of any Canadian,” he exclaimed. “It’s an outrage–a preposterous attack on the free speech rights of all Canadians!”

The full CHP statement, which includes addresses of the CPL and of the university administration, can be read here.

OTTAWA, Oct. 10, 2008 (CHPNews) – The CHP today corrected a serious mis-statement made this morning by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, regarding the federal government’s emergency $25 billion injection of liquidity into the mortgage market.

“The government says the assets it is buying are worth what it is investing,” said CHP leader Ron Gray. “That may or may not be true. Housing prices have been slumping across Canada in response to the American sub-prime mortgage crisis, and no one knows whether the value of the homes will remain above the cost of the mortgages. It is true that the government is not ‘buying up bad mortgages’ like the United States government. And it’s true this is not exactly a ‘bailout’.

“However, Mr. Flaherty said the government action would be ‘at no fiscal costs to Canadian taxpayers’, and that is not true.

“The money for this $25 billion injection will come from selling treasury bills to the chartered banks-at a discounted price, as always. That T-bill discount rate is ‘interest-in-advance’ on a bank loan to the government.

“That interest charge constitutes a very real cost-about a billion dollars-that will be given to the chartered banks by the taxpayers when the T-bills are redeemed.

“That’s hardly ‘no fiscal cost’!

“It would have been better for Ottawa to implement the CHP’s Infrastructure Plan: to have the Bank of Canada create the funds provinces and municipalities require for badly-needed infrastructure projects, and loan that money to them interest-free to get those projects going. That way, Ottawa could have made a much bigger liquidity injection into the economy, to sustain economic activity over a longer period of time, and it would truly be ‘at no fiscal cost to taxpayers’.

“The move announced this morning by Mssrs. Harper and Flaherty may put the banks in a position where they can make loans, but it cannot ensure that they will make loans. Remember that when the Bank of Canada lowered its interest rate a half point, the chartered banks only passed on a quarter point of that to their customers. They are taking in cash and hoarding it, and that’s what is creating the liquidity crisis.

“And, unlike the CHP Infrastructure Plan, today’s government action does not leave behind any lasting benefit to the country.

“The CHP plan would be a better way to deal with the economic turmoil-and it’s still not too late to put it into practice.”

LANGLEY, BC Sept. 30, 2008 (CHPNews) – The Christian Heritage Party today blasted Prime Minister Harper and his cabinet for “cowardly silence” on abortion.

Yesterday Mr. Harper, in response to questions from Quebec journalists, made it very clear that he has no interest in re-opening the abortion debate.

“I have not done that in my entire political career,” the Prime Minister said. “[I] don’t intend to start now.”

“What Mr. Harper is saying is that it’s OK for 110,000 babies to be killed every year,” said CHP leader Ron Gray. “That’s outrageous!

“Nearly three million Canadians have died in this ’silent holocaust’,” Gray continued.

“In 1988 the Supreme Court said pre-born children deserve to be protected, and it’s Parliament’s job to define that protection. But timid politicians like Mr. Harper lack the courage to take up the challenge.

“He’s willing to ‘whip’ his cabinet to make sure none of them will take up the task, either. Their silence is the price he demands for the extra pay and ‘perks’ of being on the front benches.

“I have a word for Mr. Harper: ‘Cowardly silence is not leadership!’ ”

In his statements Monday, Mr. Harper said he intends instead to focus on the economy.

“Giving priority to the economy when 450 Canadians die every day sends a very clear message about the Tories,” said Gray. “The message is that in the Conservative Party, their god is their belly.

“In the 18th century, people of African ancestry were not legally ‘persons’; that was wrong, and we changed it,” Gray said. “In 1927, the Supreme Court of Canada said that women were not ‘persons’; that was wrong, and we changed it.

“Today in Canada, pre-born children are not legally ‘persons’; that’s just as wrong, and we must change it.”

Gray said the CHP is challenging candidates from all other parties to abandon partisan politics on this important issue, and make a pledge that whoever is elected will campaign in Parliament to promote adoption as a better alternative that abortion.

“Our Party-all 59 candidates-has made a commitment to work for the protection of innocent human life,” Gray said. “That includes the pre-born, the aged and the infirm. When a woman faces an unanticipated pregnancy, we should surround her with comfort, counsel, information and material aid. We should help her understand that there are non-lethal solutions.

“We should not remain silent, like the Tory cabinet, while the baby is killed for the ‘crime’ of being conceived at an inconvenient time!”

Gray also criticized the Harper government for breaking its promise to defend the traditional definition of marriage; for refusing to defend Parliament’s exclusive right to make Canada’s laws; and for refusing to defend Canadians’ right to free speech from the predations of the Human Rights Commissions.

“It’s exactly as Senator Anne Cools said in 1998,” Gray quoted: ” ‘The problem is not just judicial activism; it is also cowardice in the House of Commons.’

“That’s not the kind of leadership Canada needs today. That’s not leadership at all.”
